*Charles' law * Elective Titles: Gay-Lussac's law, second gas law :- Charles' law, a statement that the volume involved by a fixed measure of gas is straightforwardly relative to its absolute temperature, if the pressure remains constant. This observational connection was first suggested by the French physicist J.- A.- C. Charles around 1787 and was later put on a sound exact balance by the chemist Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac. It is a special case of the general gas law and can be gotten from the motor hypothesis of gases under the assumption of an ideal (perfect) gas. Measurements show that at constant pressure the warm expansion of genuine gases, at sufficiently low pressure and high temperature, conforms closely to Charles' law. See also flawless gas.
